How to Brew Coffee with a Moka Pot

How to Brew Coffee with a Moka Pot

Bold, rich coffee with an Italian classic

The Moka Pot has been a favourite in kitchens for generations. Invented in Italy, this simple stovetop brewer creates a rich, full-flavoured coffee that's perfect for anyone who enjoys an intense, espresso-style cup at home.

While it doesn't produce true espresso, the Moka Pot brings out bold flavours and a satisfying body, making it ideal for drinking on its own or as the base for your favourite milk-based coffee.

You'll need:

  • Medium-fine ground Cafédirect coffee
  • Moka Pot
  • Fresh water
  • Hob
  • Mug
How to brew
  1. Fill the lower chamber with fresh water, stopping just below the safety valve.
  2. Fill the filter basket with ground coffee, levelling the surface with a gentle tap. Don't press or tamp the coffee.
  3. Insert the filter basket into the lower chamber and screw the top chamber firmly into place.
  4. Place the Moka Pot on a medium heat with the lid open.
  5. As the water heats, coffee will begin to flow steadily into the upper chamber.
  6. Once the coffee starts to splutter and the flow slows, remove the Moka Pot from the heat immediately.
  7. Close the lid, give the coffee a gentle stir if serving multiple cups, and pour straight away.
Top Brewing Tips
  • Use a medium-fine grind that's finer than filter coffee but slightly coarser than espresso.
  • Never fill the water above the safety valve.
  • Don't tamp the coffee – a level basket allows the water to flow through evenly.
  • Brewing over a medium heat helps avoid bitterness and brings out a smoother flavour.
  • Remove the Moka Pot from the heat as soon as it begins to splutter to prevent over-extraction.

Perfect with

The Moka Pot brings out rich chocolate, caramel and roasted nut notes, making it a brilliant match for our espresso blends and coffees with naturally full-bodied flavour.

If you're looking for an intense cup without an espresso machine, it's also a great way to experience the depth and character of our single origin coffees.
