Cafédirect started in 1991, when coffee prices had crashed and the people growing coffee were paying the price. We believed there had to be a better way to do business.
More than 30 years later, we’re still challenging how the coffee industry works – from championing Fairtrade and bringing producer voices into our business, to working towards a future where great coffee can keep being grown for generations to come.
A lot has happened along the way. Here are some of the moments that made us who we are today.
Changing the way coffee is bought and sold
Founded by Oxfam, Traidcraft, Equal Exchange and Twin Trading in response to the coffee price crisis, Cafédirect was created to ensure growers received a fairer share of the value they create.
The first coffee with the Fairtrade Mark
When the Fairtrade Foundation launched its independent Fairtrade Mark in the UK, Cafédirect became the first coffee brand to carry it, helping bring ethical coffee into the mainstream.
Producers join our Board
A landmark year that saw Cafédirect become a public company and, for the first time, producer representatives formally join the Board of Directors.
Launching the Producers Foundation
The farmer-led Cafédirect Producers Foundation was established to support livelihoods, innovation and long-term resilience in farming communities.
Bringing Cafédirect directly to consumers
From launching the UK's first Fairtrade coffee pods to acquiring a coffee subscription business and opening our own roastery, Cafédirect entered a new era of innovation.
The UK's first B Corp certified coffee company
Cafédirect became the first UK coffee company to achieve B Corp certification and was recognised with major social enterprise and impact awards.
30 years of doing coffee differently
Three decades after our founding, we celebrated the farmers, partners and customers who helped shape our journey, marking £30 million invested in grower communities since 1991.
Growing for the future
With the acquisition of Bewley's UK and the Grumpy Mule brand, we expanded our roasting capability while continuing to invest in innovation, including recyclable packaging and new coffee launches
A manifesto for the future of coffee
We launched our Manifesto, setting out our commitment to building a more sustainable and resilient future for coffee, farmers and the communities that depend on it.
A fresh look for a pioneering brand
