For more than 50 years, the farmers of La Prosperidad de Chirinos have been producing exceptional coffee while investing in the future of their communities.
Based in the San Ignacio province of northern Peru, the cooperative brings together hundreds of smallholder farming families who share a commitment to quality, sustainability and working together. Their high-altitude farms produce award-winning organic Arabica coffee, grown in the ideal conditions created by the region's rich soils, mountain climate and diverse landscapes.
We've worked alongside Chirinos since Cafédirect was founded in 1991, making it our longest-standing producer partnership.
The coffee grown by Chirinos reflects the unique conditions of the Peruvian Andes.
High altitudes, fertile soils and warm days followed by cool mountain nights help produce coffee with vibrant acidity, balanced sweetness and exceptional complexity. Every cherry is carefully hand-picked before being processed and quality checked by the cooperative, ensuring consistently outstanding quality.
The cooperative's commitment to excellence has earned international recognition, including winning Peru's prestigious Golden Cup award for coffee quality.
The cooperative reinvests Fairtrade Premiums into programmes that strengthen farming businesses and local communities. This includes technical training, access to finance, health and education initiatives, quality improvement programmes and opportunities for young people to build careers in coffee.
Chirinos also shares its expertise beyond its own members. Through a Producers Direct (our sister organisation) Centre of Excellence, farmers from across Peru come together to exchange knowledge, improve coffee quality and build resilience for the future.
Michael Montalván, General Manager of Chirinos, represents producers on the Cafédirect Board, helping ensure that the voices of coffee-growing communities are part of the decisions we make. It's one of the ways we do business differently - giving farmers a genuine seat at the table.
After more than three decades of partnership, we're continuing to work together to strengthen farming livelihoods, improve coffee quality and help secure the future of coffee for generations to come.
