Shyira is part of a network of washing stations owned by the Muraho Trading Company, who have had huge success in neighbouring districts and have now expanded to grow their regional flavour profiles in a truly unique area of Rwanda. They built their ‘little baby’ Shyira in January 2017, with the hope of making a positive impact in the area and by 2018, Shyira had not only produced some truly unique tasting coffees, but most importantly, had paid for health insurance for all its farmers for the entire year. In May 2020, devastating floods and heavy mudslides hit the Nyabihu District with communities losing loved ones, homes and livelihoods. In Nyabihu, farming families rely on coffee for 65% of their income and with much of the land no longer suitable for planting, farmers have not only lost their crops, but also their assets that they could use for future income. Raw Material and Muraho are currently running a GoFundMe to help with relief efforts and continue to provide support and repairs to the community and farming infrastructure.
