CAC San Juan del Oro
background information
and activities
Cafédirect has played a pivotal role in ensuring the sustainability of CAC San Juan del Oro as it is the only consistent client that the co-operative has had during the last ten years.
The organisation provides competitive and professional services for the production, trading and processing of members' coffee, as well as providing support to strengthen members’ managerial capacity.
Because the overall aim of the organisation is to improve the livelihoods of members, members are encouraged to diversify and market other crops such as oranges, yucca and papaya, to provide alternative sources of income rather than relying solely on coffee for their income.
The co-operative’s Women’s Committee holds workshops in leadership, self-esteem, gender and quality of life and co-operativism. The women also work on family kitchen gardens, nutritional advice and handicrafts. The advice and training given to women in these areas provides them with opportunities for additional sources of income.
San Juan del Oro members are currently working on an organic conversion programme. Their team of ten technicians run a training programme which includes improved soil conservation practices, separation of inorganic and organic residues and recycling coffee pulp for compost. Not only will this organic programme be better for the environment, it will also lead to even better tasting coffee, and higher incomes for the farmers.
San Juan del Oro is a member of Junta Nacional de Café – the union of small coffee farmer organisations in Peru.
