premiums
The Cafédirect premiums have contributed to various social and income generating programmes, which bring benefits to the farmers, their families and communities:
- Education: More families can afford to send their children to school, and many children have gone on to pursue higher education.
- Women's Committee: CECOVASA established the Committee to encourage women to participate in the organisations’activities.
- Storage & equipment: CECOVASA invested in equipment and the construction of warehouses for organic coffee, and upgrading their premises. This means the coffee is kept in the best conditions before it is shipped to the UK.
Ernesto Valencia Sejje, coffee farmer (pictured below with his family) has benefited greatly from the Cafédirect Fairtrade premiums.
"Our life here has changed. I finished my secondary education and went away looking for work, to Puno, to Sando, to Cesco and Arequipa but found nothing. Now I’ve come back to the farm, there's a different perspective to before - we now use modern (tecnifar) organic coffee production and I am going to bring up my family here on the farm."
