Fatima Lopez
Head Coffee Taster, Prodecoop, Nicaragua
Born and brought up in a coffee farming family, Fatima was just 18 years old when she took up a PRODECOOP scholarship to study coffee tasting. One of the first to participate in the three-year course, Fatima turned out to be a natural and, since starting out as a trainee in 2002 has now risen to the position of Head Coffee Taster for PRODECOOP. She is the one who ensures all their coffee is delicious. Fatima’s training has taken her to many parts of south and central America. This has enabled her to develop links with other coffee co-operatives through our Producer Partnership Programme.
“Through our long-term relationship with Cafédirect we invested in coffee quality. The co-op is training young people to work in coffee. I am now the head coffee taster. This means I taste the coffees to check the quality and run a training programme for young people. It’s creating opportunities for the next generation, like me.”
