Fairtrade in the fields:
CECOCAFEN’s work is founded on concept of ‘Fairtrade in the Fields’, and following this, the organisation promotes various programmes which benefit members, their families and communities.
At general assembly meetings, members jointly decide how to use the Fairtrade premiums (including those from Cafédirect). These funds have been invested in various community projects including the following:
Micro credit and gender workshops programme for women to invest in crops such as vegetables and fruit trees to improve household nutrition and create an alternative source of income. There are 26 women’s groups with 652 participants in CECOCAFEN.
Investment in social community projects such as water supply services, road building and infrastructural improvements.
Scholarship programme for further education for the children of co-operative members. In 2005-6 322 children received scholarships for their studies.
Processing facilities and a quality control laboratory to improve quality.
Additional coffee nurseries for members
Organic conversion programme to promote organic certification and environmentally sustainable practices
Sports & cultural activities including supporting athletic teams, musical groups and other social initiatives.
