Gumutindo: Excellent Coffee
Gumutindo was established as a coffee quality improvement programme in 1993. The growers of Gumutindo live on the lower slopes of Mount Elgon on the eastern border of Uganda. Gumutindo, meaning ‘excellent coffee’ in the local language, Lugisu, is well named, as the co-operative supplies some of the finest Ugandan beans on the world market. And with 3,000 farmers involved, Gumutindo is going from strength to strength, creating jobs locally and investing money back into the community.
With the support of Cafédirect’s Producer Partnership Programme, Gumutindo became an independent co-operative enterprise in 1998 with the aim of ensuring a reliable supply of high quality coffee whilst securing long-term returns for the farmers.
Cafédirect premium payments have been used for a variety of community projects such as extending a local clinic, repairing access roads to the fields and renovating a local school. They have also been reinvested in training (for example coffee tasting) and farming infrastructure to ensure coffee quality is always of the highest standard.
Thanks to your purchases and their commitment to quality the growers of Gumutindo have developed their knowledge and expertise considerably over the years. They are now producing high quality organic coffee beans.
So, if you would like to try their coffee, but can’t find it in your local store buy it at our online shop.
