KNCU’s Anniversary Celebrations
"Many thanks to all of you who sent warm wishes to KNCU for their 75th birthday, and who held your own celebrations to mark this special day — there were more than 40 separate celebrations around the UK in conjunction with the event.
Geoff Tudhope, our Chairman, and Jon Marlow, our Head of Sales (pictured above right) spent a few days visiting primary societies around the mountain, including some of the original 11 which formed KNCU. It was truly an incredible adventure, meeting coffee growers such as Kiwia and Tesha, 77 and 92, respectively, and friends since 1945, and hearing from them the importance of the co-operative and coffee to the community.
On Saturday farmers, co-operative managers, students (who KNCU sponsors for secondary education), marching bands, and local dignitaries in a parade through town, and finished up at KNCU’s head offices, where there were speeches, dances, songs, and fire eating. Afterward there was a great feast, Tanzanian style, much merriment, and, to top it off, a few of us climbed up to the roof to watch the sun set over Mt. Kilimanjaro.
