Kibena
background
information
Kibena is one of the most modern tea factories in the world, having been set up as a development initiative by the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC) during the ‘90s. Kibena became an independent company, Kibena Tea Limited in November 2001.
Kibena Tea Limited is founded on the ideals of ethical practice and sustainability. Adequate pay, safe working conditions, health, education, and proper housing are all central to the ideals of the cooperative. The direct, personal relationship with Cafédirect has built a strong foundation for both parties. The quality of Cafédirect's tea has improved, and the extra money and support from Cafedirect has been put to use on community projects.
For example, previously there were no government primary or secondary schools in the immediate area, so Kibena tea growers decided to build their own (23 primary schools, eight secondary schools). The government provides teachers and the premiums are used to help equip the schools with desks, pencils, books and materials.
Cafédirect premiums have also contributed to fund the town maternityunit and build a well, community centres and dispensaries.
Six secondary students have been sponsored through their studies. Farmers also voted for the premium fund to support an HIV awareness project and they decided to buy Cafédirect shares.

"We are very grateful to Fairtrade for assisting us in constructing a secondary school at Igima. The opening of the school has enabled more pupils to gain a secondary education. Thanks to Cafédirect for this contribution.“
