Joseph Kobia Ngurthari is Chairman of Kiegoi's Fairtrade Premium Committee.
As well as this he sells produce at local markets, but tea is his main source of income. He also grows maize and beans for his family.
“We have received premiums that have helped much in my local area. These premiums have developed schools, dispensaries, water to the community and the community is very much happy with Cafédirect”
Cafédirect is helping to improve our standard of living – we know we will always get a reasonable price that will not go below the fixed minimum price. Also the premium here will help us develop our communities.”

Head Teacher of Nturuba Secondary School
“We are very happy for what Fairtrade is doing for us, without Fairtrade we would not have a school. The school has now won an award - “Best Managed Secondary School in North Meru”
Nturuba Secondary School
Nturuba Secondary School is in the Meru region of Kenya. Local people had recognised the need for a Secondary School in this location since 1975 but were unable to finance it. Thanks to Cafédirect's Fairtrade premium funds the school opened in 2004 and now has 237 pupils.
Many of the students are orphans and cannot pay the school fees. The headmaster welcomes them anyway. The children are between the ages of 13 and 20 years old, the older ones coming later to education because there was previously nowhere for them to go.
