Located in Northern Peru on the highland Sierra, close to the border with Ecuador, CEPICAFE’s farmers grow their coffee on small farms alongside other crops such as banana and passion fruit.  All the farmers grow their coffee under shade trees, with guava being a favourite as its falling leaves enrich the soil while the fruit is tasty to eat.

Although this region has the ideal growing environment for the delicate Arabica coffee bean, the conditions here are changing.  Rainfall is decreasing and also becoming less predictable.  Because of this, CEPICAFE was one of the four AdapCC pilot groups to develop climate change adaptation strategies to support its farmers to cope with the changing weather. You can read more about the project here. In response, the farmers have been investing in rain-fed irrigation systems to provide water during dry spells.  They’re also learning how to maintain the soil that is prone to erosion on the steep hillsides.  Read more here.

You can taste their coffee in our range of blended Instant and Roast & Ground coffees.
