We’re committed to making our packaging as sustainable as possible.
This is a tricky balancing act because we also have to ensure that the packaging does the job of keeping our products fresh and safe to consume. To help us focus our efforts, we’ve set two targets:
- 100% of our packaging easily recyclable or compostable by the end of 2012
- We will reduce the overall amount of material used to package our products (measured by weight) by an average of 15% by 2015
The first target is the toughest, and we’ve spent the last year trying to understand our options in order to achieve this. We’re hopeful for some big breakthroughs in 2012.
In 2010, we managed to reduce the average weight of our product packaging by 10%. This was partially accomplished by switching to tea cases that use 28% less board (a savings of 5 tonnes of board over a typical sales year).
As a small company, we depend on others to provide us with expertise in this area, so we’re proud to be working with WRAP as part of the Courtald Commitment 2 to reduce both waste and the carbon impact of our packaging.
