PRODECOOP is a smallholder owned organisation that has represented the interests and well being of over 2,300 growers in the north west of Nicaragua since 1993. The coffee growers live in one of the most beautiful regions of Nicaragua, where the land is fertile and the climate is perfect for growing excellent coffee.
However, these people have faced many challenges in the past. There was a long running civil war between the Sandinistas and the Contra rebels. And then the region suffered the devastating impact of Hurricane Mitch in 1998. Yet the people of PRODECOOP have managed to succeed regardless of these considerable challenges. By unifying previously different groups under the PRODECOOP banner, the growers in the region, are now much stronger. With support from Cafédirect they have developed their expertise and knowledge to produce some of the best coffee beans in the world. They are experts at nurturing the delicate Arabica bean, which is grown at high altitude in near perfect conditions - to give a beautifully rich, yet delicate, well-rounded flavour.
Cafédirect’s premium payments have enabled them to invest in their own in-house quality control laboratory where people like Fatima work to ensure the quality of their beans is of the highest standard.
Cafédirect premiums and other additional funds were used to rebuild roads and local infrastructure following the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch in 1998.The growers are further supported by PRODECOOP’s pre-payment programme. This enables the individual farmers to manage their finances better over the entire year, rather than being dependent on a one-off payment being paid at the end of the harvest season.
