Workers at Kelliewatte reap the benefits of Cafédirect Fairtrade Premiums:

Kelliewatte distributes Fairtrade premiums through its “Fairtrade Joint Body”. A number of projects have been initiated through this body. One of these is the purchase and distribution of flasks for estate workers, a simple initiative but one which has been extremely successful and popular amongst estate workers.

Previously workers were forced to drink from streams near to where they were working, many of which did not provide a clean water source. The impact of this has been improved health among workers.

Premiums have also been used for home improvement loans for farmers, electricity supply
loans, the purchasing of gas stoves and the building of a temple for workers.
